The Seattle Seahawks have a wide variety at the running back position, but rookie Chris Carson may be making a strong case to start…

While a certain Seahawks running back candidate is making weight incentives, rookie Chris Carson is making big plays and rapidly ascending up the depth chart.

Carson has shown his worth as a goal line back with two touchdowns in the Seahawks’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, and he’s further cemented his status as a threat to lead the team in carries with his performance against the Minnesota Vikings on Friday night.

On six carries, Carson had 27 yards including a very explosive 13-yard run, and showed his worth as a third-down option as well:

On the play above, Carson picks up the blitz perfectly on third down, and then releases and makes himself available as a receiver.

Russell Wilson does what he does best and hits him perfectly in stride, so Carson doesn’t have to break his momentum and he winds up with a big gain.

This kind of all-around play has already earned Carson snaps with the Seahawks’ first unit. Of course, he’s competing in a very deep group of players at the position, one that includes veteran Eddie Lacy, and promising players like C.J. Prosise, Alex Collins, and Mike Davis. There’s also Thomas Rawls lurking around.

Carson, however, has been really proving himself of late. He’s getting it done on the field not only as a running back, but also on special teams. Here’s another big play from his game against Minnesota:

These are the types of plays that not only earn you a roster spot, but show the coaches that you don’t take any role on the team lightly. Carson has the potential to play on four downs and as the 249th overall pick in this past year’s draft, it seems he’s providing the Seahawks with yet another late-round value.
