New England Patriots: 5 Things to Watch in Matchup Against Houston Texans
#3 Can Austin Carr and Jacob Hollister Stay Hot?
Two undrafted rookies, Austin Carr (WR from Northwestern) and Jacob Hollister (TE from Wyoming), combined for 12 receptions, 160 yards and a touchdown in the opener against the Jaguars. Both are fighting for a roster spot and will look to remain hot in Houston.

Both Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett looked to Carr and Hollister in pressure situations. Whether it was third down or in the red zone, the rookies were the top two options. Many of the starters who sat out against the Jaguars are expected to play at least a series or two in Houston, but both Carr and Hollister should once again see plenty of snaps.
The two appear to have excellent chemistry with Jimmy Garoppolo, but it remains to be seen how well they mesh with Tom Brady. Malcolm Mitchell, a rookie last season, was targeted just 15 times in his first eight games. Over his final six regular season games, he was targeted 33 times. Getting Carr and Hollister on the field with Brady this preseason could speed up that process and improve the depth at receiver should there be any injuries.
Carr’s top competition for a roster spot is Devin Lucien, who spent last year on the practice squad. The Patriots are loaded at wide receiver. However, an extra roster spot may open up if Matthew Slater misses an extended period of time. Hollister on the other hand is battling Matt Lengel and James O’Shaughnessy for the third tight end role behind Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen.
