Coaches and quarterbacks have come and gone from Tennessee but one constant was the dangerous interior lineman Jurrell Casey

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to a multi-year extension with Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jurrell Casey.

Despite having two more years on his contract, Casey signed a four-year extension worth $60.4 million with $40 million in guarantees.

Casey’s previous deal gave the Titans the ability to move on from Casey to save cap space, reducing the job security for the 27-year-old. Tennessee stood to save over $7 million next season if they’d cut Casey.

The new deal makes Casey the seventh-highest paid defensive tackle in the league with the third-most guaranteed money.

Titans executive vice president/general manager Jon Robinson acknowledged the rarity that comes with this deal, but a rare deal makes sense for a rare player.

"“It is rare to do a contract extension early in this business. But Jurrell is a unique player in that he was drafted here, has already done an extension with the team, is a standout in our community, and has earned multiple Pro Bowl invitations. We are happy to have him as a Titan for many years to come.”"

Casey and the Titans announced the deal on social media late Friday afternoon.

Drafted out of USC with the 77th overall pick in 2011 Casey has been a consistent force on the Titans interior defensive line. While quarterbacks and coaches have come and gone, Casey was the glue that held the Titans franchise together. Casey has played under three different head coaches while in Tennessee.

In six seasons with Tennesee Casey has collected 33 sacks with 221 tackles in 94 games, all while en route to two Pro Bowls. Last year he represented the Titans as the team’s nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for his work in the community.

Casey stands to start next to Sylvester Williams in the 4-3 defense while mentoring 2016 second-round pick Austin Johnson out of Penn State. He’ll play on a defense that improved through free agency this year by adding cornerback Logan Ryan and safety Jonathan Cyprien.
