Philadelphia made two major cuts as their training camp opened, and Eagles fans are ecstatic

Eagles 2014 first round pick Marcus Smith is no longer with the team, making him one of the largest busts in recent NFL Draft history.

Selected with the 26th overall pick in 2014 Smith was projected to be a ferocious pass rusher after leading Louisville with 16 sacks in 2013.

Starting zero games over his first three seasons in Philadelphia Smith racked up 12 tackles and four sacks in 37 games.

Smith, who many said entered the NFL with the body of a high school football player, became the butt of jokes in Philadelphia. Former head coach Chip Kelly was reportedly high on Smith, but general manager Howie Roseman often takes the fall on the selection.

Financially the Eagles take a minor hit by releasing Smith, and will pay him nearly $1 million this year to watch from his couch or on an opposing sideline. They’d already declined the fifth-year option on his contract heading into the offseason, and are simply fast-forwarding a foregone conclusion.

They do avoid paying out his roster bonus, saving them more on the backend of his deal.

Also leaving the team Wednesday is offensive lineman Allen Barbre, who started at left guard and provided valuable versatility last season. Second round pick Isaac Seumalo was named the starter heading into training camp by offensive coordinator Frank Reich, leading to Barbre’s departure from the team.

General Manager Howie Roseman says the door is still open for Barbre to return on a team friendly deal, but the $2.1 million cap hit wasn’t sustainable in Philadelphia this season.

Clearing approximately $2.5 million from Barbre and Smith’s contracts, plus the $4 million in Ryan Mathews’ deal that will be cleared once healthy, gives Philadelphia room to add a veteran cornerback. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz acknowledged the team is looking for help in the secondary with second-year corner Jalen Mills and veteran Patrick Robinson the projected starters.
