Ezekiel Elliott may be one of the NFL’s youngest stars, but a year long investigations could place him on the sidelines this season

While the NFL continues its prolonged investigation into Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, some within the business feel a conclusion to the matter is coming.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting a “growing sense” Elliott is suspended for a short period of time following the league domestic violence investigation.

Schefter says any suspension involving Elliott could last one or two games when all is said and done, placing the Cowboys without their best player against the Giants and potentially the Broncos in week two.

In a TMZ report last year, Elliott’s ex-girlfriend accused the running back in July 2016 of assaulting her, but did not press charges.

Elliott’s father immediately defended his son in a news release saying “Ezekiel has done nothing wrong.”

The Cowboys star running back has a motley of off the field concerns following the assault accusations, including an incident at a St. Patricks Day parade where he groped and exposed a woman.

Currently riding the Cowboys bench behind Elliott are veterans Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris. Undrafted free agent Jahad Thomas from Temple was also added to the roster following this year’s NFL Draft.

In a division such as the NFC East where every game matters, the Cowboys would be placed in an unenviable position. Potentially missing the season opener against a division rival would be a gut punch to a team already missing several starters to suspension.

Linebacker Damien Wilson will miss the first four games of the year after a failed drug test, lineman Randy Gregory is out indefinitely, and cornerback Nolan Caroll is facing DWI charges.

It’s a lot to overcome for a roster that’s already gone through some extreme turnover following a 13-3 season the year prior.
