DeAngelo Williams Torches Dallas Cowboys Fans
By Erik Lambert
DeAngelo Williams is a 34-year old running back. That typically makes it hard to find interest from NFL teams, but that hasn’t stopped him.
He still believes he can make at least one more go of it, and in the meantime has kept himself busy during the offseason. After making an in-ring pro wrestling appearance, it seems the former Pro Bowler wanted to try his hand at cutting a promo in the NFL. It centered around four teams he had absolutely no intention of signing with, even if they were interested.
First was his original team the Carolina Panthers, whom he holds a grudge with for how they handled his exit a few years ago. Then there’s the Browns and Jaguars, mostly due to their ineptitude over the past couple years. The biggest surprise though, and easily the most stinging of his barbs was saved for the Dallas Cowboys.
He told ESPN that he has a long history of disliking that franchise, and it starts with the fans.
"“My fandom for the team I was raised as will not allow me to go to the Cowboys,” Williams told Schefter. “I’m an ’80s baby … and the 49ers ruled the ’80s. The Cowboys somewhat did something in the ’90s; I even refuse to give them that. …The Cowboys, they win. They just don’t ever show up during the playoffs. They always disappear in the playoffs. I’ve got a great depiction of the Cowboys’ fan base. During the regular season last year, they were on cloud nine. You couldn’t tell them anything because they were going to win the ‘ship — that’s all they said. Fans just got extremely super annoying. Then, the minute they lose, they either got cheated, somebody was hurt — the excuses start flowing. It’s just amazing to me. That fan base just in general can’t handle defeat.“"
Williams has plenty of allies in this
There’s little doubt Williams made plenty of enemies on social media with those comments. Being a 49ers fan, it would make sense he hates the Cowboys. Those two franchises waged war in the playoffs across three different decades from the 1970s to the 1990s, often with a trip with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. At the same time there are loads of other fans, particularly in New York, Philadelphia and Washington who have to be loving what Williams is saying.
If only because they’ve been saying the same thing for years. Either way, trash talking is always fun. It’s not like Dallas needs him anyway. He can feel free to say what he likes. What will nag at Cowboy fans though is whether or not he has a point.
