NFL front office jobs rarely become available, and Brett Veach now has one of the best jobs in the business

Kansas City Chiefs Co-Director of Player Personnel Brett Veach is expected to be named the team General Manager according to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

Veach quickly became the hot internal name in Kansas City’s search for a new leader in the front office after his predecessor John Dorsey was fired less than a month after the NFL Draft.

Dorsey was also removed shortly after informing veteran wide receiver Jeremy Maclin of his release over voicemail last month.

Kansas City gave Reid a contract extension running through the 2021 season around the same time Dorsey was removed from the organization.

The organization made the hiring official in a news release Monday afternoon.

"“After a comprehensive search process, I am pleased to announce that we have hired Brett Veach to serve as the next General Manager of the Kansas City Chiefs,” Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. “Brett has a sharp football mind, a tremendous work ethic and a keen eye for finding talent. Over the last four seasons he’s played a critical role in building our football team. I look forward to working with him to continue to build on the strong foundation we have in place.”"

Working under coach Andy Reid in Philadelphia, Veach as a strong background in professional and collegiate scouting. He spent three seasons as an assistant to the veteran head coach Reid before moving into Philadelphia’s personnel department.

Veach joined Reid in Kansas City after Philadelphia made a coaching change following the 2012 season when the Eagles went 4-12 in Reid’s 14th season with the team.

Kansas City has made the playoffs in three of the first four years under Reid, yet has failed to advance past the divisional round.

During the NFL Draft, the franchise set itself up for the future by trading up for Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes III, who drew similarities to Brett Favre, whom Reid coached in Green Bay.

Veach will have his work cut out for him next year with no first-round draft pick, as the Chiefs used their 2018 pick to acquire Mahomes, the heir-apparent to Alex Smith.

Kansas City has few players going into 2017 playing with an expiring contract, making Veach’s job quite simple in the fact that there are no major negotiations looming next offseason.

The futures of veterans Tamba Hali and Alex Smith will be major pieces of Veach’s tenure as both are coming to the end of their careers. Despite the team drafting Mahomes, Smith enters the seasons as the Chiefs starter following a 12-win season.
