College Football: Two Vanderbilt players shot in Target parking lot

Three college football players were involved in an attempt to retrieve a stolen phone

Two members of the Vanderbilt college football team were shot in a Target parking lot Monday night and a third was involved in a plan to retrieve one of the players stolen cellphones, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Neither’s injuries are reportedly serious, according to a police statement obtained by the Associated Press.

Donaven Tennyson, a sophomore wide receiver, attempted to sell his cell phone to a buyer after connecting through an online marketplace. When the two parties met, the buyer allegedly stole the phone from Tennyson.

When the 19-year-old saw his phone listed on the same site after the encounter, he recruited two teammates to help him retrieve it.

Defensive backs O’Montae Daley and Frank Coppet accompanied Tennyson on a quest to retrieve the phone. Daley is a redshirt freshman, while Coppet is an early enrollee from the 2017 recruiting class.

Armed with a pellet gun, the three met the seller and another person Monday afternoon. Those two they met brought actual weapons, resulting in both Daley and Coppet being shot in the leg.

"“Our foremost concern is the well-being of our students, but it appears their injuries are not life-threatening,” Vanderbilt said in a statement. “The University is monitoring the situation and will determine if any action on the part of the university is appropriate.”"

Tennyson appeared in five games last season for Vanderbilt, making eight catches and earning SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition.
