Will one of the rising NFL quarterbacks hit free agency next offseason?

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is reportedly becoming increasingly frustrated with the organization. Reports coming out of Oakland say the NFL MVP candidate was expecting to have a long-term contract completed by training camp but is unhappy with the lack of movement towards a deal.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Carr has a base salary of $977,519 with over $700,00 in bonuses he’s able to accrue.

NFL Media columnist Mike Silver says, despite the desire by both sides to find an agreement, Carr is frustrated by the lack of movement on a new deal.

"However, two sources said Carr, given his previously stated desire to be a “Raider for life,” has grown frustrated with the slow pace of discussions and is extremely eager to get the deal done before the start of training camp."

Oakland is working on a deal with guard Gabe Jackson, and is also negotiating with pass-rusher Khalil Mack.

Both Carr and Mack are expected to receive deals with over $20 million per year averages, and each could set records at their respective positions. Mack stands to earn $5.9 million this year, and over $13 million after having the fifth-year option on his rookie contract picked up.

After 2017 the Raiders have Donald Penn, Jackson, Carr, Reggie Nelson, Sebastian Janikowski, and Jelani Jenkins heading towards free agency.

Amari Cooper’s fifth-year option also comes into play soon, with 2018 being the last guaranteed year of his rookie deal before the team would have to commit to an eight-digit price tag.

Whether or not Carr has a deadline to which he’ll sign a deal this year is unknown, but if he were to hit the open market, its open season for any team wanting a franchise quarterback just tapping into his prime.
