ESPN continues to create history with Beth Mowins to call NFL Monday Night Football

For the first time in thirty years a female broadcaster will get the call for an NFL game. ESPN will debut college football broadcaster Beth Mowins as part of their week one Monday Night Football coverage.

Mowins and former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan will call the second game of the Monday Night Football doubleheader on September 11 between the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers.

Mowins and Ryan have worked together before, calling the University of Florida spring game.

Gayle Sierens was the first woman to call an NFL game in 1987, but her local station prevented her from getting any more games.

Mowins is largely known for her work in college football, but is also the voice for NCAA softball soccer, and volleyball.

Ryan won 127 games as the head coach of the Jets and Bills over eight seasons, and was fired after two years in Buffalo with a 15-16 record.

Reaction around the sports world hasn’t been entirely positive towards the announcement Mowins was getting an NFL game. A majority of those dissenting from the choice aren’t playing the “gender card,” but aren’t a fan of her style or game voice.

I’m personally not the biggest fan of Mowins, but I’m not against her getting a great opportunity to call an important NFL game. Hopefully more pioneers such as herself have these opportunities.

Mowins and Ryan’s game will begin after the conclusion of Saints and Vikings as part of the Monday Night Football doubleheader for week one of the 2017 season.
