Indianapolis will honor one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history

Peyton Manning may have won just a single Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts, but his legacy there is undeniable.

Because of Manning’s contributions to the Colts and Indianapolis community, the organization will officially retire his number 18 on October 8th against San Francisco.

On October 7, the organization will also unveil a statue of the future Hall of Fame quarterback outside of Lucas Oil Stadium.

Rarely do the Colts retire numbers, having just seven in the rafters already. Manning will be the first Colt from the Indianapolis era to have his number join those above the field he dominated on.

“Peyton will always be a Colt,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said in a statement on his Twitter account. “This will be an event our city, state and Colts fans around the world can celebrate and be proud of.”

Here’s what the preliminary rendering of the Manning statue looks like outside Lucas Oil Stadium.

Manning holds nearly every franchise record among quarterback statistics, including touchdowns, passing yards, and wins. His continued play in Denver placed him atop the NFL record books for passing yards and touchdowns.

Super Bowl XLI is just one of two Super Bowls won by the Colts organization and was their first since 1970.
