Philadelphia needed to get Carson Wentz help this offseason and made two big moves in free agency

Howie Roseman looked at the Eagles depth chart and acknowledged the organization needed to add multiple wide receivers. The general manager did just that by signing Alshon Jeffrey and Torrey Smith to one-year contracts.

Jeffrey, the cream of the crop in terms of free agent wide receivers, is on a true one-year deal worth $14 million where the Eagles can avoid financial disaster long-term and allow Jeffrey to prove himself after a four-game suspension last year.

Smith has a one-year deal worth $5 million with two options attached, which could keep him in Philadelphia for three years.

Adding those two with slot receiver Jordan Matthews makes for a much improved wide receiving corp in Philadelphia.

After that, the Eagles have a first-round bust in Nelson Agholor, a disappointing Dorial Green-Beckham, and preseason stars Paul Turner and Bryce Treggs.

With needs on the defensive line, cornerback, and running back the Eagles can now avoid drafting a wide receiver extremely high in the NFL Draft and focus on the rest of the team.

More from NFL Free Agency

Look for a wide receiver to be drafted in the mid-tier rounds, especially the fourth round where Philadelphia has two picks.

All of this is a great set of moves by Roseman, who protects the team from financial disaster long-term while building up quarterback Carson Wentz this year.

All in all it’s a successful day for the Eagles and their fans with two big time wide receivers now in the fold and the flexibility to make more moves if needed.
