Dallas Cowboys

Prediction: The Cowboys will not use the franchise tag

The list of free agents for the Cowboys is pretty lengthy, 18 players to be exact.

Key names such as CB Morris Claiborne, WR Terrance Williams, SS Barry Church, and CB Brandon Carr are just a few. Of the upcoming free agents for Dallas this offseason, Claiborne seems to be the most likely to receive the tag with the salary cap not in their favor this time around. Right? Right?!

Not necessarily. Owner Jerry Jones has a history of NOT utilizing the franchise tag during his tenure. Since free agency began in 1993, Jones has only used the tag four times. To take it one step further, two of those four times were with one player (OLB Anthony Spencer). So it’s easy to detect that Jones is not in favor of using it unless it’s in case of an emergency.

With Claiborne being injury prone, Church an “ok” safety not necessarily worth his tag value ($10.8M), Williams being outplayed on occasion by slot receiver Cole Beasley, Dallas may not be in a frenzy to tag a particular player this offseason.
