2017 NFL Draft Top 10 Quarterback Rankings: Pre-Senior Bowl
By Erik Lambert
#8: Davis Webb (Cal)
After three years of trying to make a go of it at Texas Tech, Davis Webb ended up transferring to California. There he managed to revive his career as a starter with a standout season in 2016. His size alone will draw plenty of attention at 6’5″, 232 lbs. Combined with his ability to stand in the pocket and examine the field, it’s not hard to see why he’s got a quiet buzz around him. That and the strong arm he can use to uncork some pretty deep passes from time to time.
The reason he’s not higher is the injury struggles he went through at Texas Tech combined with a decided lack of athleticism. He’s not going to help win games with his feet. Then there is the reality that his numbers explosion was assisted to a large degree by the spread system he played in under Sonny Dykes. In other words he has all the classic attributes of a long-term project. Given time and good coaching he could be a starter. Is there a team that will give him either though?
