NFL Week Seven Preview: New Orleans Saints vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs Summary
Consistency has been the biggest issue for head coach Andy Reid and his Kansas City Chiefs. While that has been a bugaboo for the team, not having running back Jamaal Charles and outside linebacker Justin Houston healthy and at 100% has hindered the team enough. Charles has been present the past two games but has only totaled 11 carries in two games and is having troublesome knee issues after tearing his ACL in 2015.
A productive Charles is great for the Chiefs. As is having quarterback Alex Smith steady and managing the offense. Smith is averaging 259.4 passing yards per game and has completed 67.4% of his passes. Tight end Travis Kelce leads the team in catches with 25 for 252 yards and two touchdowns while #1 receiver Jeremy Maclin leads the team in receiving yards with 293. In the absence of Charles, backup running back Spencer Ware has been a nice spark with 646 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns.
The 14th ranked Kansas City defense is currently missing their best player in Houston and the sacks have suffered because as the team is 31st in the league in team sacks with seven. What they do have is a secondary that is very solid. Cornerback Marcus Peters leads the NFL in interceptions with five while the secondary as a whole has a hand in the defense ranking 10th in pass defense.
2015 Comeback Player of the Year safety Eric Berry is the leader of the secondary and will be vital even at strong safety defending the Saints productive offense. Linebacker Derrick Johnson is playing his normal role as the team’s leading tackler with 32
