New Orleans Saints Summary

An 0-3 start was not in their plans to start the season. Outside of a close loss on the road against the Giants in week two, the teams lost in a pair of shootouts against the Raiders and the Falcons.

They also participated in shootouts in back-to-back weeks against the Chargers and the Panthers with the only difference is walking away as the victor. Quarterback Drew Brees has been his normal self this season as he has passed for 1,733 yards (4th in the NFL) and 14 touchdowns (3rd) with four interceptions.

Once again, Brees has a slew of receiving weapons with Brandin Cooks (25  catches, 428 yards, 3 TDs) leading the charge. Rookie receiver Michael Thomas has posted a touchdown in three straight games and is fresh off a career-high in yards with 78 against Carolina last week. Along with wide out Willie Snead, Brees has led this passing element of the Saints to first overall in the league in that department. The same can’t be said about a run game that is 29th in the league.

Running back Mark Ingram is ahead of the pack with 273 yards and a touchdown on the season but the element has been lackluster at best so far this season.

As mentioned, the defense hasn’t truly been great either. One of the few bright spots for the 31st ranked unit has been the play of defensive tackle Nick Fairley (11 tackles, 3.5 sacks) and defensive end Cameron Jordan (12 tackles, 2.5 sacks). Although the bright spots may not have been as “illuminate” as perceived, it is some type of good news for a unit that is dead last in points allowed per game (33.6), 31st in receiving yards allowed per game (314.0), and 26th in rushing yards allowed per game (117.8).
