2016 NFL Season: Jamaal Charles and Other Week 1 Injury Updates
By Erik Lambert
Opening day of the 2016 NFL season is here and it can’t commence without talking about some key injuries being monitored around the league.
Few things can impact the outcome of a game more than good players being hurt. The season hasn’t even begun yet and many are already dealing with potentially devastating situations. Here is a rundown of the most notable names inhabiting the list and what is expected for them today.
Early Games
– Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles won’t be returning for opening day. The Chiefs aren’t going to risk his injured knee until they know it’s 100%. At present he is week-to-week.
– First round pick Joey Bosa won’t be back in time to help the Chargers in week one. He’s nursing a bad hamstring and is nowhere near game shape. Expect him to miss a couple weeks.
– Kevin White and Kyle Long are expected to play for the Bears in Houston pending final observations in pregame. Texans left tackle Duane Brown is out as expected.
– Dennis Pitta, at one point believed a lost cause due to so many injury setbacks is expected to suit up for the Ravens against Buffalo. Needed good news after the loss of Ben Watson.
– Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari is battling a back problem. Not good news since the team just lost Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton. Even so expectations are that he’ll give it a go in Jacksonville.
Late Games
– A hamstring problem will forced Dolphins wide receiver DeVante Parker out of the opening game against Seattle. Another frustrating setback for the former 1st round pick.
– Offensive guard Jack Mewhort overcame fears he tore his ACL and is expected to play for the Indianapolis Colts against Detroit. Andrew Luck can rest a little easier.
Primetime Games
– Not having Martavis Bryant or Heath Miller will be hard enough, but now the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to make due without receiver Markus Wheaton as well. Truly it will be the Antonio Brown circus.
– Both Rob Gronkowski and Nate Solder did not make the trip to Arizona for the New England Patriots. This leaves Jimmy Garoppolo in a tough spot for his first start.
