Carson Wentz Suffered Hairline Fracture to Rib Thursday Night
Second overall pick Carson Wentz will miss the next two preseason games
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback of the future Carson Wentz will miss at-least the next two preseason games after suffering a hairline fracture in his ribs.
The former North Dakota State quarterback took multiple heavy hits Thursday night against the Buccaneers. The injury reportedly happened on his second to last play while working behind the second and third-team offensive line.
Eagles first year head coach Doug Pederson addressed the injury following Saturday’s practice, where Wentz was limited.
"“Carson felt some discomfort and soreness as we began this morning’s practice. We decided to limit him throughout the remainder of practice and, as a precaution, sent him for a CT scan after practice. The scan revealed a hairline fracture in his ribs. We do not know an exact timetable for his return, but we hope to have him back before the end of the preseason.”"
Wentz played from the two minute warning in the second quarter up through the mid-point of the fourth quarter. He finished 12-24 with an interception, but received very little help from his wide receivers, who dropped at-least four passes.
The rookie was sent flying multiple times Thursday, leading to the rib injury. He stayed in the game, and showed good mobility and arm strength throughout the game.
Philadelphia had no plans to start Wentz during the beginning of the regular season. While the pre-season reps would have helped the rookie quarterback, it will be best for him to watch tape and learn on the sidelines in bubble wrap.
Cleveland sent Philadelphia the second overall pick to draft Wentz, along with a conditional day-three pick, for two firsts, a second, a third, and a fourth round pick. Philadelphia originally sat in the number 13 slot of the draft, but made multiple moves to select Wentz.
Originally, Sam Bradford was re-signed for two years, with the majority of the money being paid out in his first year. That would allow the Eagles to trade him after one more season to earn back the draft picks they lost in the trade made to acquire him from the Rams.
Chase Daniel was brought in by Pederson to be the primary back-up after the two spent time in Kansas City. Daniel is expected to help Bradford learn the new offense on and off the field.
Bradford, Daniel, and McLeod Bethel-Thompson will receive the snaps when the Eagles travel to Pittsburgh for the second week of the preseason.
