Darrelle Revis Hints At Major Move Coming With Jets
By Erik Lambert
He’s one of the best cornerbacks in football, but Darrelle Revis is not a fool. He understands he plays a position that has a short shelf life in the NFL.
For the time being the New York Jets are content to keep him there. Why not? He reached his seventh Pro Bowl and had five interceptions on the season. Even at 30-years old there was zero indication he was facing an imminent regression in his abilities. Still, everybody knows it’s just a matter of time before that happens. Even Revis himself wasn’t afraid to admit he’s already contemplating that possibility.
During an interview with WFAN in New York, the future Hall of Famer discussed the team and his thoughts on the future, including what he might have to do in order to stay on top of his game. Chief among them was following the path of other great defensive backs.
"“There will probably be conversations in the future about maybe moving my position to safety. But as of right now, I still feel I can play at a high level, and play the cornerback position at a high level.”"
Corners moving to safety is nothing new in the NFL. Several big names over the years have had great success doing that. Ronnie Lott did it in the 1980s with San Francisco. Tampa Bay iron man Ronde Barber made the switch and the most recent example was recently retired Charles Woodson who went out a Pro Bowler at the position after great success at corner.
The reasoning behind it is simple. Safeties aren’t required to cover as much as corners do, so the demand for speed is somewhat lessened. They must be smart, alert and tough. A veteran corner makes a ton of sense for playing that position since they have plenty of experience to draw on. Darrelle Revis still might be a few years away from that, but when it comes the New York Jets undoubtedly trust he can make the transition.
