The secondary was a weak spot for the Pittsburgh Steelers defense in 2015. Hopes were high things would turn around this season, health permitting.

Seems the injury bug refuses to cooperate. With a number of question marks infesting their cornerback position, the team receiving grievous news that promising youngster Senquez Golson could almost three quarters of the season due to a foot injury.

Golson was the Steelers’ 2nd round pick last season. Unfortunately he never got to play in a single regular season game before he was forced to undergo surgery to repair his shoulder. So hopes shifted to this year in hopes he could help bolster the coverage woes on the back end. Now this latest development. It’s sad more than anything given how hard the former Mississippi corner worked to overcome critics of his 5’9″ frame.

Pittsburgh faces a tall task in finding a way to overcome not just questions at the top but a depth concern as well. It’s likely they’d hoped they could avoid using 1st round pick Artie Burns extensively in games before he was ready. After all, chiefs among the concerns about him was how raw his technique and discipline is in coverage.

Chances are another second-year kid in Doran Grant is going to get extra opportunities in light of this development. One can only hope he does something with it because there are few options on the market that would likely solve this problem.
