The Seattle Seahawks are entering training camp with former TCU star Trevone Boykin as their top backup quarterback…

The Seattle Seahawks and their coaching staff led by Pete Carroll are certainly not opposed to winning football games with young quarterbacks, and barring an addition at some point in the next few weeks, they’ll be going into the season with plenty of youth to go around at the position.

Russell Wilson won the starting job in 2012 as a third round pick, which came as a shock to many at the time. This year, they seem really comfortable giving the primary backup role to undrafted free agent Trevone Boykin, one of the most electrifying players in college football over the last few years.

Boykin has his share of issues — on the field and off — but when he puts on the pads and helmet on game day, he’s pretty darn good.

Boykin had 64 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over the last two seasons, and added another 17 touchdowns on the ground as a runner. He even caught a touchdown pass.

As good of a playmaker as Boykin was, there have been questions about his consistency as a passer, which is fair. There are also questions about his character given he was suspended this past season at TCU for punching a police officer two nights before the Alamo Bowl.

It was a poor showing of judgment, but certainly the NFL has proven a place where second chances are abundant if nothing else.

Pete Carroll knows his QB situation, and he seems comfortable with it. In fact, he seems more than just comfortable. According to The Seattle Times, Carroll is flat out excited about the prospect he’s got in the former TCU star.

“We’re really excited about Trevone,’’ Carroll said. “We see a guy that really matches up with our style of play and that’s comforting to know that we don’t have to change how we are playing when he plays in the game. We’d limit him but we would still stay within the same framework.’’

With questions behind Wilson as to who will ultimately wind up being the backup, Carroll reiterated his belief that Boykin has what it takes to win the job.

“We’ll see a great deal of him in the pre-season and we’ll get a great feel for him and we are hoping it will just continue,’’ Carroll said. “I know he’s a ball player and he’s learning the offense and he has handled everything very well, communicates very well. His attitude has been great, he has a terrific arm. So we are really excited about him…I see the continuity that really fits there. He’s got a great shot at it.’’

Size-wise, Boykin matches up really well with Russell Wilson. Athletically, they are also pretty similar. If Boykin can make strides as a passer over the course of camp and the preseason, he could wind up being a really interesting backup quarterback option for Seattle down the road.
