2015 Season Recap

The 2015 season started with the Dawgs going 4-0 to open the season with three of those four wins totaling at least 48 points or more. Then suddenly, the team hit a wall and in the worst possible way. An aggressive Alabama Crimson Tide team came to Athens and handed the Dawgs a humbling 38-10 defeat and the very next week at Tennessee, the season changed dramatically when lead running back Nick Chubb torn three ligaments and cartilage in his knee on the first play from scrimmage that sent Chubb to the sideline for the season and delivered a huge blow to Georgia from there to season’s end.

Georgia closed out the season with five straight wins including a 24-17 victory against Penn State in the TaxSlayer Bowl to end the season with a 10-3 record. Chubb shared carries with talented change-of-pace running back Sony Michel but Michel took over the load and finished the season with 1,406 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns. Chubb himself totaled 747 yards and seven touchdowns before his injury and the offense never truly got comfortable at the quarterback spot with Virginia transfer Greyson Lambert (1,959 passing yards, 12 TDs, 2 INTs), junior Brice Ramsey (249 yards, 1 TD & 2 INTs) and third-stringer Faton Bauta (154 yards, 4 INTs) all seeing action throughout the season. WR Malcolm Mitchell led the team with 58 catches, 865 yards, and eight touchdowns however, Mitchell’s career at UGA is now complete after graduation. Add in shifty receiver Terry Godwin (35 catches, 379 yards, and two TDs) and that was pretty much the passing game.

On defense, edge rushers Leonard Floyd & Jordan Jenkins combined for 8.5 sacks, free safety Dominick Sanders led the team with six interceptions, which was also tied for first in the SEC, and UAB transfer linebacker Jake Ganus led the team with 101 tackles. The unit as a whole was a saving grace for the Dawgs, especially in the second half of the season, when they held four of their last seven opponents to 13 points or less while also placing seventh overall in total defense and third overall in red zone defense.
