Ex-Baylor lineman Shawn Oakman indicted for sexual assault

Shawn Oakman has officially been indicted for second-degree sexual assault by a Waco grand jury Wednesday afternoon. Oakman was arrested and released on bond just two weeks before the NFL Draft, and was evidently not selected by any NFL teams.

A female graduate student at Baylor reported he brought her home from a nightclub, and allegedly assaulted her at his home.

Oakman’s lawyer released the following statement in regards to the indictment:

"“Shawn Oakman maintains his innocence in regard to the recent accusations made against him, and he insists that the sexual relationship in this case was consensual. It is unfortunate that this situation has been lumped in with other events that are unrelated. It is important that we not rush to judgment. Every citizen accused of a crime in this country is presumed innocent unless the state proves the accused offense beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. We look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Oakman and presenting the facts involved in this situation.”"

Oakman was originally a member of the Penn State football team, but was dismissed by head coach Bill O’Brien after he attempted to steal food from a campus convenience store, and grabbed the female cashier.

He was also named in an assault report by an ex-girlfriend in 2013.

Oakman had 17.5 sacks and128 tackles during his three years playing at Baylor.

The all-time sack leader at Baylor is the third former player to be indicted on charges of sexual assault over the past couple of years.

Baylor head coach Art Briles was removed from his position over the offseason after an investigation found the program failed to address the hostile environment.

No trial date has been set for Oakman, who is innocent until proven guilty.
