Jaguars RB Denard Robinson Found Asleep in his Sinking Car
Jaguars running back fell asleep at the wheel of his car and drove under water
A truly scary situation was nearly a tragedy when Jacksonville Jaguars running back Denard Robinson fell asleep at the wheel of his car and crashed into a retention pond.
Police found Robinson’s car sinking into a Jacksonville retention pond at 4:22 a.m. Sunday morning, with Robinson and a female asleep in the front row.
The 25-year-old running back and the passenger were both assisted out of the vehicle, which was reportedly totaled.
Police found no evidence indicating Robinson was under the influence, nor where there skid-marks on the road to suggest he made an attempt to stop.
Robinson acknowledged the accident on his Twitter page Tuesday afternoon:
Jacksonville also released a statement, saying they were “aware that running back Denard Robinson was involved in a single-car accident over the weekend and (are) thankful that nobody was injured.”
Denard Robinson was drafted in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Michigan by Jacksonville. In three seasons he has five touchdowns and over 1,200 yards from scrimmage.
Robinson’s claim to fame was his swiss army knife abilities shown at Michigan, where he was a mobile quarterback. He was named the Big 10 Offensive Player of the Year in 2010 after throwing for 2,570 yards and 18 touchdowns, while also rushing for a conference-high 1,702 yards and 14 touchdowns.
He finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting during that season.
His role has been diminished in Jacksonville with the Chris Ivory signing in free agency, and T.J. Yeldon being drafted out of Alabama last year. He has the athleticism to return punts, but has not gotten as many chances to contribute with Rashad Greene and Nick Marshall on the team.
Robinson is entering the final season of his rookie contract, and is due to earn over $700,000 in Jacksonville.
