Arizona Cardinals Cut A Player For Weirdest Reason Ever
By Erik Lambert
Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians is one of the most beloved in the NFL, but like most others at that position, it’s not wise to make him angry.
A big thing with him is he can’t stand players who can follow simple rules. Just how serious he is about it came to light in the new TV program “All or Nothing” that followed the Cardinals for their 2015 season. Arians made it clear to his player that one thing they had to remember was not to park their cars where they weren’t supposed to.
"“If there’s a sign on a parking place anywhere in this facility, don’t park in the bitch,” Arians said, “or I’ll tow your ass.”"
Defensive end Lawrence Okoye, the former British Olympian who finished 12th in discus back in 2012, found that out the hard way in October. Running late to practice, he decided to pick a random spot to park so he wouldn’t lose any more time. That proved to be a huge mistake as the spot he chose was reserved for people who had bought tickets to come view practice at the facility.
The Cardinals had just lost the previous week to Pittsburgh and were 4-2, so Arians was in no mood for mistakes by anybody. When he found out what Okoye did, he didn’t hesitate to cut him. Later during a meeting with the GM and team president, he offered explanation as to why.
"“There weren’t any parking places, so he just parked and came running in,” Arians said. “Tough s—, bro.”Arians continued: “He has a different sense of entitlement having been an Olympian. He is a talented guy. He ought to go to Oxford.”"
Okoye wasn’t helped by the fact that somebody had parked in Arians’ personal parking space twice in two days earlier that season, which led to his strict enforcement of the rule. Okoye has since landed a roster spot with the Dallas Cowboys. How long that will last is up for debate though. Not because of his parking choice but ironically due to his plans to attend Oxford law school in 2017.
