Andrew Luck Signs Mega-Contract With Indianapolis Colts Through 2021
The first overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft has signed one of the largest contracts in NFL history
A long-awaited contract negotiation has finally reached an end. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay announced the team and quarterback Andrew Luck has agreed to a contract extension that will keep Luck in a Colts uniform through the 2021 season.
Ben Albright first reported that Luck will earn $80 million guaranteed and could possibly earn upwards $130 million. The final numbers we have heard are $139 million.
The deal will pay him $75 million over the first three years of his five year contract.
Albert Breer pointed out that Luck’s deal will end the year following the expiration of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Luck was drafted by the Colts after the team lost Peyton Manning to what was believed to be career-ending neck surgery. After granting Manning his release, the Colts selected Luck out of Stanford after going 2-14 during the 2011 season. He was taken one pick ahead of the Heisman Trophy winner, Robert Griffin III.
In his four seasons in the NFL, Luck has 101 touchdowns and over 14,800 passing yards in his career. He has already made three Pro Bowls in his four year career.
Andrew Luck took the Colts to the playoffs during his first three years, and had a chance in 2015 if not for multiple injuries putting him on ice for the season.
In six playoff games, Luck has nine touchdowns, but 12 interceptions.
Members of the NFL Mocks staff gave their instant reactions to Luck signing this historic deal:
"Eric Robinson: It’s a passing league. It’s a QB driven league. You either have one or you don’t. To me, he’s worth that money over guys like Cutler, Kaepernick. If Kaep can get over $60M guaranteed, Luck is worth that investment. He did lead the team to three straight playoff berths in his first 3 seasons.Shawn Spencer: That’s a lot of money they could have invested in defense or the offensive line.Erik Lambert: Over five years? Given his health record? Overpaid.Rodney Stokes: They need to get that man a running back if he’s going to survive"
We will have more on this breaking news as it becomes available.
