Doug Baldwin Signs Four-Year Contract Extension with Seattle Seahawks
One of the most underrated wide receivers in the NFL has just signed a new contract
According to multiple reports, the Seattle Seahawks have secured wide receiver Doug Baldwin through the 2020 season. The 27-year-old will earn upwards of $11 million per season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Baldwin was in the last year of his contract, and was due to make $6.325 million this year.
Despite going undrafted in 2011, the Seahawks picked up the former Stanford receiver and helped develop him into one of the most consistent receivers in the league today.
In 78 games with Seattle, Baldwin has over 3,800 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns. Last season in his breakout campaign he had a league-high 14 touchdowns and his first 1,000 yard season in the NFL.
Pro Football Focus ranked Doug Baldwin the seventh best wide receiver in the NFL last year, higher than Odell Beckham Jr., Calvin Johnson, and Brandon Marshall. He was also named to the site’s 2nd Team All-NFL list for last season.
They also ranked him as the fourth best slot receiver in the NFL.
Here’s what PFF’s Sam Monson said of Baldwin:
"Doug Baldwin showed last season the kind of production slot receivers can put up, beyond simply catch volume. Despite playing 80 percent of his snaps as a slot receiver, he notched 14 touchdowns, which tied for best in the NFL among all receivers. He caught 78.8 percent of the passes thrown his way, dropping just two passes all season, and was more than just a short-gain receiver, averaging 13.7 yards per reception. Baldwin has quietly become one of the league’s best receivers, but we just don’t admit it because he is dismissed as “just a slot WR.”"
With Doug Baldwin now locked into his new contract, the Seahawks will have him playing alongside Tyler Lockett, Jimmy Graham, Jermaine Kearse, and Paul Richardson as the starters going forward into 2016. With the loss of Marshawn Lynch, Pete Carroll will be looking towards his leaders on offense to help pick up the slack with several rookie running backs coming in through the draft.
Baldwin was also a member of the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl championship during the 2013 season. He had one touchdown during the Seahawks playoff run towards Super Bowl XLVIII.
