Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Dan Skuta was arrested for simple battery

NFL off-seasons are typically quiet, with the occasional off-the-field fiascos grabbing headlines. On June 19, Jacksonville Jaguars veteran linebacker Dan Skuta was arrested for allegedly shoving a woman in the face and into a glass window.

The woman suffered no physical injuries, but will press charges against the former undrafted free agent.

WJXT News4 in Jacksonville was the first on Monday morning to report the linebackers’ arrest earlier this month.

Jaguars team spokesman Dan Edwards released a statement Monday morning following the WJXT report: “The Jaguars are aware of the situation involving linebacker Dan Skuta and are currently gathering more information. The team has been in constant communication with Dan through this process in its entirety. No further comment can be made at this time.”

Witnesses say Skuta was flirting with the woman, who refused to give him her phone number. An allegedly “bloodshot, glassy” eyed Skuta smelled of alcohol when he used an open hand to shove the woman’s head against the glass window.

The reports from Jacksonville made no mention of bail or pending hearings for Dan Skuta.

Skuta was undrafted out of Grand Valley State in 2009 and signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. He played in Cincinnati through the 2012 season, appearing in 56 games.

San Francisco signed him to a two-year deal in 2013, and earned five sacks in 10 starts in his last season with the 49ers.

Jacksonville made him a lucrative offer prior to the 2015 season, which runs through the 2019 season.

The 30-year-old outside linebacker’s five-year, $20.5 million deal with the Jaguars makes him easily cuttable after the 2016 season, with no dead cap hit for the final three years of his deal.

Second round pick Myles Jack (if healthy) is expected to start over Skuta at outside linebacker. He joins a young Jaguars team that added Jalen Ramsey, Sheldon Day, and Yannick Ngakoue this year.

The return of 2014 third overall pick Dante Fowler from ACL surgery is also expected to help the rebuilding Jaguars franchise take the next step towards relevancy.
