Despite coming off of an Achillies injury, the Miami Dolphins decided to give veteran defensive lineman Cameron Wake a new contract.

According to ESPN’s NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Wake has received a two-year extension with the Dolphins. The deal is worth $15 million and includes $10 million in guaranteed money.

Cameron Wake, who is second all-time on the Dolphins career sacks list, was due to become a free agent after this season after signing a five year, $48.2 million contract in 2012.

Wake has played his entire seven year NFL career in a Dolphins uniform. After going undrafted out of Penn State in 2005, he was briefly signed by the New York Giants.

After failing to find an NFL suitor, Wake signed with the CFL’s BC Lions, where he developed into a star pass rusher. He played in the CFL for two seasons, earning the Rookie of the Year and two Defense Player of the Year honors.

He would go on to sign a four year deal worth $4.9 million with the Dolphins prior to the 2009-2010 season.

Needless to say, Cameron Wake has been a diamond in the rough for the Miami Dolphins. In his seven year career, Wake has accumulated 70 sacks and 257 tackles. He sits at a distant second on the franchises all-time sacks list by 60 sacks to Jason Taylor.

In his 100th career NFL game, Wake tore his Achillies tendon, ending his season after just seven games. An injury that is often difficult to recover from, the 34-year old Wake appears committed to being available for Miami in the near future.

Unlike most players at his age, Cameron Wake has little wear and tear from playing in the NFL for years. After two years of not seeing the field and an additional two in the CFL, Wake played his first NFL down at the age of 30.
