After a breakout season, tight end Jordan Reed was due to receive a large contract extension with the Washington Redskins.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Reed and the Redskins have agreed to a five year contract worth $50 million.

Drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Jordan Reed has been consistently building his resume in Washington. After scoring three touchdowns in his first two seasons, Reed burst onto the scene with 11 touchdowns in 2015. He became a vital piece to Kirk Cousins’ development as a quarterback and the Redskins division championship.

Despite only starting nine games last year, he also had over 900 receiving yards and averaged just under 70 receiving yards per game.

Pro Football Focus ranked Reed as the fifth best tight end in the league last year. While his run and pass blocking were ranked among the worst in the league last year at the tight end position, his receiving abilities were ranked only behind Rob Gronkowski and Greg Olsen.

The Redskins have focused on building a sustainable receiving game over the past week. With DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon heading into the last year of their respective deals, Washington needed to give Cousins help if he is there for the long run.

Jackson also carries a long injury history, so insuring receiving depth for the long term was key.

The team drafted TCU wide receiver Josh Doctson in the first round of last weeks NFL Draft and also brought in Georgia running back Keith Marshall on Saturday’s later rounds.

The Redskins drafted Jamison Crowder out of Duke last year. Crowder had over 600 receiving yards and two touchdowns after getting six starts.

With Jordan Reed now locked up to a long term deal, the Redskins will shift their focus to quarterback Kirk Cousins, who received the franchise tag this offseason.
