Sam Bradford Seeking A Trade Out Of Philadelphia
By Erik Lambert
It would seem at least one person was not happy the Philadelphia Eagles made their blockbuster trade to grab the #2 overall pick in the NFL draft: veteran quarterback Sam Bradford.
After all, he just signed a an extension to stay with the team, likely operating under the belief he was being given a chance to be the starting quarterback moving forward for the team. Instead it appears he has taken on more the form of a stopgap, meant to keep the seat warm until whichever rookie quarterback the Eagles end up taking is ready to play.
It became clear right away that this is not something Bradford was keen on doing.
Jason Cole of Bleacher Report then came in with information that he is already looking to punch his ticket out of town, even if it might involve giving up some of the money Philadelphia gave him to stick around.
Bradford is not without leverage. He’s still just 28-years old and for the first time in years made it through most of an NFL season healthy, missing just two games. Over the final five games of the 2015 season he threw for over 300 yards three times and amassed eight touchdown passes to just four interceptions. This included a big upset win over the New England Patriots in Foxborough.
So it’s not hard to imagine other teams having interest in him. Word was Cleveland attempted to trade for him last season and are still seeking quarterback help despite their signing of Robert Griffin III. San Francisco has 12 picks in the draft and seem at an end in their relationship with Colin Kaepernick. Bradford played for Chip Kelly last season, so there is a familiarity there and the 49ers have more than enough money to handle his contract.
Whether the Eagles will be willing to meet those demands is the sticking point that bears watching over the coming weeks.
