Johnny Manziel Cut by the Cleveland Browns
Once believed to be the savior of the Cleveland Browns, it appears Johnny Manziel was just all smoke and mirrors. With the off the field issues continuing to pile up and his reported issues following rehab, new Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson has officially decided to move on.
Johnny Manziel has officially been cut by the Cleveland Browns.
After winning the Heisman Trophy at Texas A&M with his prolific, almost magical playing style, Manziel quickly became a hot-button topic among draft circles. Some loved his electric play style. Some thought he would never make the transition and would ultimately be a bust.
The Browns would trade up from 26th to 22nd with the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a third round pick. The Eagles would later take that third round pick and trade it to Houston for a fourth and fifth round selection.
Despite the fact Manziel only played 14 games in his two seasons in Cleveland, he never fell in favor of head coach Mike Pettine. He failed to see much playing time his rookie year behind Brian Hoyer and only had 35 pass attempts.
The 22nd overall pick of the 2014 draft finished his rookie season with 175 passing yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions.
In nine games this past season, Manziel threw for 1,500 yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions. He got spot starts around the injured Josh McCown and would also see time on injured reserve with a concussion.
Some reports allege that Manziel’s concussion was actually a cover for him showing up to practice hungover or on some type of substance.
You would be hard pressed to find someone willing to sign an off-field disaster like Manziel. The Dallas Cowboys have always like Manziel, but Jerry Jones and his sons have apparently backed off on the Manziel love.
Best guess would be that no one touches Johnny Manziel, especially to be a starting quarterback. Family and friends have expressed fear for his wellbeing, and that should be addressed first and foremost. Hopefully this move by the Browns today opens his eyes.
