The Miami Dolphins are incredibly thin in their secondary after letting Brice McCain go last month. Now, General Manager Chris Grier is already looking for a big name player to fill his role.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Miami Dolphins are deep in trade talks with the Philadelphia Eagles regarding former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Byron Maxwell.
The Eagles signed Maxwell to a lofty six year contract worth $63 million just last offseason. With the high-spending Chip Kelly regime now gone, the front office run by cap-conservative Howie Roseman may be looking to shed Maxwell’s $9.7 million cap hit for 2016.
The Eagles currently do not have a second round pick after Kelly sent it to the Rams for Sam Bradford last year. They do however currently have the most draft picks in this years class, prior to compensatory picks being awarded.
The Eagles have been spending a lot of money to keep their own young talent in the system this year. They signed Sam Bradford, Lane Johnson, Vinny Curry, Malcolm Jenkins, Brent Celek, and Zach Ertz to long term deals over the past couple weeks. Former first round pick Fletcher Cox is still waiting to get his mega-deal completed, but he has one more year on his rookie contract.
If they can not make a deal for a draft pick, the Eagles may be interested in a wide receiver. While a big-time name like Jarvis Landry may be off the table, former Saint Kenny Stills would be someone to watch for. The Dolphins drafted DeVante Parker out of Louisville in the first round last year and may be looking to get him more playing time, if healthy.
Both teams are entering their first year with a new head coach. While this isn’t Doug Pederson and Adam Gase’s first time on the block, their influence on these types of decisions is yet to be known.
