Tom Brady Signs Extension with the New England Patriots

In an effort to help their cap situation and keep their franchise quarterback around for the long-term, the New England Patriots signed Tom Brady to a new contract. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the new deal, which is reportedly for two years and will keep Brady in New England through 2019.

Brady had previously signed a three-year deal that began prior to the 2015 season that was worth $27 million. While the complete terms of his new deal are not yet  known, his cap number will all but likely go down.

The Patriots were projected to have just below $12 million in cap space. With no first round pick and plenty of holes to fill, having the financial flexibility to make moves helps New England greatly.

Tom Brady is currently fifth all-time in career passing yards with 58,028, just 13,912 yards behind the all-time leader Peyton Manning. If he wants to break Manning’s record by the time his new contract expires, he would have to average about 3,500 passing yards per season. That could certainly be obtainable if he stays healthy and productive.

With a new contract for Tom Brady, the future of his heir-apparent Jimmy Garoppolo becomes questionable. A second round pick in 2014, Garoppolo has seen little to no playing time behind Brady.

A couple of weeks ago I proposed the idea of trading him to a team such as Philadelphia. My deal would send DeMarco Murray to New England on a restructured contract for the young quarterback. Both teams have big needs at those positions and it would be a win-win for both franchises.
