Minnesota Vikings Hire Former Eagles OC Pat Shurmur

After not landing the Philadelphia Eagles head coaching job, it appears that Pat Shurmur has found a new home. The former Eagles offensive coordinator will reportedly join the Minnesota Vikings in a role not yet specified by the team. The team currently only has one role on the offensive coaching staff open, that being the running backs coordinator, but Shurmur does not have a history being a running backs coach.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer and Shurmur have never worked together in the same organization, but Zimmer must have seen something he like in Shurmur’s long history in the NFL. You can expect Shurmur to fill some sort of “assistant head coach” role, or a similar role that teams are now calling a “passing game analyst”.

Shurmur was reportedly on track to rejoin the Los Angeles Rams, but it appears those talks fell through along the way.

The news was first reported by Fox Sports insider Jay Glazer Saturday night.

The Vikings would be Shurmur’s fourth NFL organization since 2010. He originally broke into the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles as an offensive line coach after earning his stripes in the college ranks at Michigan and Stanford. After spending nearly a decade in Philadelphia, Shurmur became the Rams offensive coordinator in 2009. After spending two years in St. Louis, Shurmur was named the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, where he only lasted two seasons.

Once he was let go from Cleveland, Shurmur joined Chip Kelly’s new staff as the offensive coordinator in 2013. The Eagles offense ran well in its first couple year with Shurmur on board, but Chip Kelly was running the majority of the show.

After Kelly was fired after week 15 this year, Shurmur took over as the interim head coach and led the Eagles to a 35-30 win against the New York Giants. Shurmur did receive an interview during the Eagles head coaching search, but fell out of favor to Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson.

Pederson had expressed interest in retaining Shurmur, but apparently a role could not be found on Pederson’s staff. The Eagles recently hired former San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich to replace Shurmur in the same role.
