Are Cam Newton’s MVP Chances Legit?

Can Cam Newton lead the Carolina Panthers to a playoff run and take home the NFL MVP this year? Our staff weighs in on the award talk.

Love him or hate him, it’s very hard to deny what Cam Newton is doing in Charlotte this season.

Just a few months away from a car accident that had the football-viewing world in the Carolinas praying to the heavens, Newton is performing at the top of his game looking to secure the Panthers their third consecutive playoff berth and home-field advantage throughout.

As Bostonians chime in (right about …. now) on Tom Brady and his potential record-shattering season, our staff has other ideas.

Newton’s Most Valuable Player chances are legitimate.

In fact, he might just be the front-runner.

QUESTION: Do you think Cam Newton can win the NFL MVP in 2015?

Erik Lambert

"Yes. Primarily because he has been the entire basis of that Panthers offense. Keep in mind he lost his best wide receiver before the season even began and yet he’s still playing at this level. His comeback over Seattle and that five-touchdown performance made it clear he’s playing elite football and is the main reason his team is 10-0."

Shawn Spencer

"Yes, he can win the MVP. There’s still a long way to go, but Cam Newton and Tom Brady are the front runners. Both have depleted receiving corps, yet they still find a way to win. If either goes 16-0, that would clinch the award, but Newton is the likely choice if that doesn’t happen because this kind of play is expected out of Brady."

Matthew Holowiak

"Cam can absolutely win the MVP this year. We are so used to that defense being as dominant as it is that what Cam is doing is even more impressive. What makes him stand out is the lack of talent around him. He is making younger players better. He is engaging veterans. He is putting the team on his shoulders and finding a way to keep winning, and just when it seems they are just finding ways to win, he puts up a truly dominant performance in week 11. He, in my opinion, is the front runner. They won’t have to go 16-0 for him to win it, but if he continues the pace he is on then he has an MVP and a potential trip to San Francisco to look forward to."
