If there is one thing the NFL world has learned about the Philadelphia Eagles and their head coach Chip Kelly, it’s that he refuses to settle at the quarterback position.
The man will bring in anybody and everybody he thinks might be able to help his team win games and doesn’t stick to a player very long. As a reminder, here is a list of names he has started or brought on board as competition since he took over.
- Michael Vick
- Nick Foles
- Matt Barkley
- Mark Sanchez
- Tim Tebow
- Sam Bradford
Now word is after another series of injury problems, Bradford’s future in Philadelphia is cloudy. Word is Sanchez has an opportunity to claim the starting job the rest of the season if he plays well with Bradford out.
"NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on NFL Network’s GameDay First that Sanchez is expected to start Thanksgiving with Sam Bradford sitting due to a shoulder injury. In the two-game audition, Sanchez could play himself in the full-time starting gig.“The future for Bradford in Philadelphia is murky,” Rapoport said. “First of all, in the short term, Mark Sanchez is expected to start again on Thursday, so he’s going to get at least a two-game audition potentially for the starting job.”Rapoport added that the extension Bradford did not sign in Philly this offseason essentially removed any security blanket for the quarterback.“It’s not like the Eagles can say ‘we’ve invested a ton of guaranteed money in Bradford, he’s for sure our starter,'” Rapoport said. “If Sanchez plays well enough to, say, win two games, it seems as if the team would continue to use him as the starter going forward…”"
What this essentially means is the Eagles will give Sanchez the reins and then resume their hunt for a legitimate starter in the off-season. That is why they have to be considered prime players for Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III.
Both are expected to be available next year. Griffin is a free agent and has lost his starting job to Kirk Cousins. Kaepernick just went on injured reserve after losing his job as well to Blaine Gabbert. Word is the San Francisco 49ers will try to trade him, but given the nature of his current contract it’s more likely they cut him instead.
Given their dual threat capability, something Kelly covets highly in quarterbacks based on his success at Oregon, these two would be no-brainers. Outside of Marcus Mariota, whom everyone knew he wanted badly in the draft, they would be the next best thing given they each have the same athletic traits and an added bonus of playoff experience.
