Peyton Manning Breaks NFL All-Time Passing Yards Record
After missing the opportunity to break one of the NFL’s most prestigious records in the house that he helped build, Peyton Manning finally reached that mark. The 39-year old quarterback of the Denver Broncos set the NFL’s all time career passing yards record with a four yard pass early to Ronnie Hillman against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday afternoon.
Manning had been on pace to break the record in Indianapolis, but fell just three yards short after some defensive penalties left the Colts with the ball late.
He passes Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favre’s record of 71,838 passing yards, which was set when he retired with the Vikings in 2010. The veteran Manning had entered the game with 71,836 passing yards and needed just three on Sunday to break the record. He had entered last weeks game needing 283 yards before falling short. He is also tied with Favre for most wins by a quarterback with 186 career wins.
This is not the first time Manning has passed Favre on the career record books. He became the NFL’s all time passing touchdowns leader last season, passing Favre’s 508 touchdowns. He currently has 539 touchdowns in his long NFL career.
This record certainly helps place Manning among the all time greats in the history of the NFL. He’s been selected to 14 Pro Bowls, seven All Pro teams, won Super Bowl XLI with the Colts, and has led the NFL in passing touchdowns four times in his career.
Manning holds the Colts all time passing yards, passing touchdown, completion percentage, passing completions, and passing attempts records. He’s undoubtedly the greatest quarterback in the franchises history.
After undergoing multiple neck surgeries late in his career, the Indianapolis Colts decided it was time to let go of one of the games greatest players. Since then, Manning has revitalized his career in Denver and once again places himself in the record books.
Despite suffering their first loss of the season last week to Indianapolis, Manning and head coach Gary Kubiak are well on their way to their first playoff appearance together. Denver will play the Chicago Bears on the road next week as they continue to solidify their lead in the division.
