Titans Shock the League, Fire HC Whisenhunt

The Tennessee Titans have shocked the NFL by making a move no one saw coming. The team has officially fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt after less than two seasons at the helm. Whisenhunt was 3-20 in those two years with the team, but the team was never able to build a solid team around him. The team drafted the second overall pick and 11th overall in the past two drafts.

According to Ian Rapoport, the decision was made by teams ownership after seeing the team get viably worse since Whisenhunt took over. Mike Mularkey will takeover on an interim basis. Perhaps they saw what happened in Miami and decided the time was now to make a drastic change after just one and a half seasons.

Whisenhunt started as a head coach with the Arizona Cardinals in 2007 and led them to a Super Bowl appearance in the following season. He finished his tenure in Arizona with a 45-51 record and sat out the 2013 season.

With the drafting of Marcus Mariota, you would think the Titans ownership would be looking for a coach who suits his playing style. In the college game, Kevin Sumlin from Texans A&M and Art Briles out of Baylor are the two names that come up easily.

Let the Chip Kelly rumors begin. Obviously Chip would have loved to get Mariota in Philadelphia, but the coach is not leaving the City of Brotherly Love anytime soon. It takes too long for him to get HIS guys prepared for his system to just dump it all after three years.

The 1-6 Titans will play in New Orleans next week and expect to have Marcus Mariota fully healthy and ready to start.
