The first big shoe of the NFL trade deadline has officially fallen. As the Denver Broncos sit at the bottom of the league in offense, John Elway and the Denver front office felt like upgrades were needed in the receiving game. According to league reports, the reeling San Francisco 49ers have sent veteran tight end Vernon Davis to the Denver Broncos for three late-day draft picks. San Francisco will swap two draft picks with the Broncos and send an additional sixth round pick for the services of the 31-year old tight end Davis.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Vernon Davis has been a staple in the 49ers organization since being drafted with the sixth overall pick in 2006. In his tenth season playing in the NFL, Davis has over 5600 receiving yards and has caught 55 touchdowns. Davis sits fifth all time in catches by a 49er, sixth in receiving yards, fourth in touchdowns, and third in targets. He will certainly go down as one of the greatest 49ers receivers of all time. Broncos owner John Elway made an official announcement on Twitter regarding how the veteran will help the Denver Broncos.

After Julius Thomas left the Broncos in free agency this past offseason, the team acquired veteran Owen Daniels to fill a big role left by Thomas. Daniels has recorded two touchdowns and only 129 receiving yards thus far for the Broncos. The addition of Vernon Davis will certainly help open up the field for Peyton Manning and give him another strong pass catching option.

The 2-6 49ers are expected to start selling off more pieces as they trudge through an underwhelming season. Offensive lineman Joe Stanley is reportedly on the trade block as well.

The Broncos remained undefeated this week and will play Andrew Luck and the Colts next week in Indianapolis. This game, of course, will be another homecoming for one of the greatest of all time, Peyton Manning.
