Steve Smith Tears Achillies Tendon, HOF Career in Jeopardy
In an unfortunate turn of events, veteran wide receiver Steve Smith may have played the last game of his NFL career. The 36-year old receiver was contemplating retirement after this season, but a devastating injury may move that date up.
Smith went down during the Baltimore Ravens 29-26 victory against the San Diego Chargers. After catching a pass from Joe Flacco, Smith went to turn up field and gain extra yards after the catch. He went down and immediately pointed to his achillies tendon. The Ravens staff helped the veteran Smith off the field while the future hall of famer wore a towel over his face.
According to head coach John Harbaugh, tests did confirm the Ravens’ worst fears. Smith tore his achillies tendon and will be out for the season.
Regardless of whether Steve Smith decides to return for a 16th season, he is most certainly heading to Canton. He has nearly 14,000 receiving yards and 76 touchdowns in his 15 seasons in the NFL. He started his illustrious career with the Carolina Panthers, but was not able to return after the 2013 season. In March of 2014, Smith signed a three-year contract with the Ravens worth $11.5 million.
Baltimore is now left empty at the receiver position. First round pick Breshad Perriman has been unhealthy all season and has not yet made his NFL debut. Kamar Aiken has played decent for Baltimore, but his play can not match what Smith has been able to accomplish.
The Ravens will go on a bye week next week, which could mean time for a replacement to come in and learn the offense. The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday afternoon after Monday nights game. The Ravens will play Jacksonville on the road as they attempt to win their third game of the 2015 season.
