The Jason Pierre-Paul saga is coming to a much needed close to the delight of Giants fans everywhere. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the veteran defensive end is expected to sign a one year deal to come back to the New York Giants. The Giants and Pierre-Paul met all day today and the 26-year old has reportedly passed all his physicals. The terms of this deal have reportedly been agreed on and the contract is in the final stages of completion
Jason Pierre-Paul’s story has been a focal point of both the Giants offseason and 2015 campaign. The elite pass-rusher missed all of training camp and the start of the 2015 season after suffering a major hand injury on the 4th of July. The accident resulted in him losing a finger on his right hand and other related injuries.
New York Giants doctors examined Pierre-Paul’s hand during a meeting several weeks ago. The two parties were looking to find some sort of wrap or device JPP could wear on his hand while playing. Pierre-Paul posted several videos of himself working out since the surgeries and appeared to be in decent physical shape.
The Giants originally placed a franchise tender on the 26-year old after the season in an attempt to keep him in New York. After the accident and observing his injuries, the Giants rescinded offers to Pierre-Paul until tonight. If all terms are finalized, he could be eligible to return to practice with his team as early as tomorrow.
Jason Pierre-Paul was drafted out of South Florida by the Giants with the tenth overall pick in 2010. He helped lead them to a Super Bowl championship in 2012 and has earned two Pro Bowl appearances in five seasons. He currently has 42 career sacks and 286 total tackles.
The Giants have gone 4-3 with out Pierre-Paul, which places them atop the NFC East. They will play the New Orleans Saints next week, but Pierre-Paul’s status for that game is undetermined at this point. The Giants are expected to request a two-week roster exemption so he can return to practice before using up a spot on the 53-man roster.
We will have more details on this breaking story as it becomes available.
