Did We See Michael Vick’s Last NFL Game?
With Ben Roethlisberger still recovering from a knee sprain, Michael Vick stepped in once again for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unfortunately, the 35-year old Vick had one of the least productive games of his 15-year NFL career. Vick was three for eight with six, yes SIX, passing yards at the beginning of the third quarter. He also had 47 rushing yards.
On one of his rushes, Vick came up lame heading out-of-bounds. Yes, it was another hamstring injury for Vick, forcing him to sit out the rest of the game.
With Roethlisberger still unavailable and Vick nursing another soft tissue injury, Landry Jones stepped in with the team down 10-6. The former Sooners quarterback led the Steelers on four consecutive scoring drives to win the game 25-13 against one of the NFC’s best teams. Jones would finish 8 for 12 with 168 passing yards and two touchdowns.
After the game, NFL Network analyst and friend of Mike Vicks, Deion Sanders, brought up the very realistic possibility we may have seen the last of Mike Vick.
"It was a good run and I hate to say it…that might be the last time we see Mike Vick play ball"
Prime Time might be right on this one. He sited Vick’s inconsistencies and his inability to stay healthy, especially with those soft tissue injuries like hamstring strains. Vick has alway had trouble staying healthy in his career. During his five years in Philadelphia, Vick dealt with multiple quadricep and hamstring injuries, including the hamstring pull that resulted in Nick Foles winning the starting job.
Everyone on NFL Network’s game day panel agreed that Landry Jones should start should Big Ben not be able to return this week.
While it may not be time to officially sign Vick’s NFL swan song, the outlook is not good. He only got an NFL job this season after the Steelers lost Bruce Gradkowski to a season-ending surgery on a dislocated finger.
Vick currently has 22,464 career passing yards and 133 passing touchdowns. He’s the NFL’s all-time rushing yards leader for a quarterback with 6,109 yards after passing Randall Cunningham in 2011. He spent time with the Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, and Pittsburgh Steelers during his NFL tenure.
The Steelers will play the Chiefs in Kansas City next Sunday and will try to improve on their 4-2 record.
