Todd Gurley’s breakout for Rams everything we hoped
When I watched Todd Gurley play two summers ago, I knew he was going to be something incredibly special. Of course, I’m not alone, but the St. Louis Rams thought enough of the former Georgia Bulldog to make him the first running back selected in the first round since Trent Richardson in 2012.
Gurley’s debut with the Rams two weeks ago was underwhelming to say the least. He carried the ball six times, totaling 9 yards and a catch for five yards.
It didn’t look like he was really ready to get back to football activities, but he proved everyone wrong on Sunday with a huge performance against the Arizona Cardinals. Most importantly, the Rams won the game, but Gurley’s breakthrough against Arizona was everything we’d hoped he could be at the NFL level — and more.
Gurley broke through the Cardinals defense to the tune of 146 yards on 19 carries and a pair of catches for 15 yards. And here’s a stat for you:
Burley’s explosiveness looked like it was back. His quickness, vision, and burst to the second and third level… He looked absolutely awesome.
At this point, it appears there’s nothing lingering from Gurley’s ACL recovery. He looked absolutely phenomenal against Arizona, and the Rams gave him a game ball as a result.
I’m not sure what we had actually expected from Gurley in his rookie season, but this was a really pleasant start. He has every tool to be an elite running back in the NFL, and we were able to see the start of that in a huge road win against the undefeated Cardinals.
