After a disappointing 1-3 start to the 2015 season, the Miami Dolphins have decided to fire head coach Joe Philbin. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday morning that owner Stephen Ross made the decision Sunday night after losing to the Jets in London Sunday morning.

Defensive Coordinator Kevin Coyle is also expected to be relieved of his duties. Offensive Coordinator Bill Lazor will reportedly stay with the team for now.

Here is Schefter’s initial report of the Miami Dolphins’ plan to move on from Philbin.

"As of last night, the Dolphins were preparing to fire head coach Joe Philbin, per league sources. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross always could change his mind, but the organization was preparing to make a move as soon as today, per sources. Should Ross follow through with his plan, Dolphins tight ends coach Dan Campbell would be the leading candidate to become the interim head coach and replace Philbin."

Entering his fourth season with the Dolphins, Philbin ends his tenure with a 24-28 record. He also failed to get the Dolphins to the playoffs in each of his first four years. This was Philbin’s first head coaching experience in his football career after spending the past five years as the Offensive Coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. His career work in college and the NFL came mostly on the offensive line, where he spent time as the coach for college teams such as Iowa, Harvard, Northestern, and Ohio among others.

Philbin replaced interim coach Todd Bowles in 2011 after Bowles stepped in following the firing of Tony Sparano.

The Dolphins haven’t made the playoffs since 2008 when they won the AFC East. They have not won a playoff game since the early 2000’s.

Here is owner Stephen Ross’s statement on Philbin’s firing:

"“This was a tough decision for me to make knowing how tirelessly Joe worked in his four years here to make this a winning team. He is a man of the highest character and integrity that I developed a close personal relationship with. I am extremely disappointed with how we have started the season, but I feel confident that we can improve quickly with the talent we have on our roster. We will soon be announcing an interim coach to lead the team going forward.”"

Miami will move on with Dan Campbell at the helm. Campbell spent 10 seasons in the NFL as a tight end and won a Super Bowl with the Saints. He was drafted in the third round of the 1999 by the New York Giants, where he was a part of the Giants NFC title in 2000-01 season. He later spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions, and Dallas Cowboys. His only coaching experience has been as the Dolphins’ tight end coach since 2011.

The disappointment in Miami comes after a fruitful offseason with much excitement within the South Beach fanbase. After signing Naomukong Suh and Jordan Cameron, the team locked up several key players. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill and center Mike Pouncey each received large contract extensions, creating a sign of stability in a team desperate for a playoff birth.

The team enters their bye week during week five of the NFL season and will face the Tennessee Titans on the road under new head coach Dan Campbell.
