Eagles Kiko Alonso has Grade 2 ACL Sprain, Partial Tear
According to local Philadelphia reports, the Philadelphia Eagles may have lucked out on a potentially serious injury to linebacker Kiko Alonso. Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News writes, per sources, that Alonso suffered a Grade 2 ACL sprain. Grade two means a partial tear, which is much better news than a complete tear.
Alonso is coming off a total ACL tear from his tenure in Buffalo which required surgery. The injury is to his left knee, which is the same one he injured with the Bills after winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
The team has not officially confirmed it, but two local sources have each reported the diagnosis. There are two ways the Eagles can approach this. They can rest Alonso for a month and let him use a brace (if he’s ready) or have him undergo surgery.
Once strong at middle linebacker, the Eagles are in a tough spot. They also lost young, budding star Mychal Kendricks to a strained hamstring while covering a receiver down field. Reports late Monday night though make the injury seem not as serious as once thought. Chip Kelly is usually cautious with muscle injuries though, so it’s a wait and see game there.
Veteran DeMeco Ryans is coming off his second achillies surgery as well. Third round pick Jordan Hicks was expected to play mostly special teams this season, but was forced to step in. He performed decent and was a shining light in a tough start of the season for the Eagles.
Also bit by the injury bug was defensive end Cedric Thornton. He was seen wearing a cast on his hand and is out for a couple of weeks after he broke the fourth metacarpal on his right hand.
Philadelphia will take on the 2-0 Jets in New York in week three.
