Dez Bryant injury timeframe increased to 10-12 weeks
If you’re a Dallas Cowboys fan or fantasy football player, you’re hating the news NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport delivered this morning…
Roddy White, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter, is even less optimistic…
Yikes.
This is horrible news for Dez Bryant and the Cowboys as it pertains to this season, but if it’s better for his long-term health than it’s probably something he has to do. It’s hard to come to grips with that, but for a wide receiver in the NFL, your feet are almost just as important as your hands. Taking care of yourself physically is of paramount importance, and an initial timeframe for Dez to return to the field in 4-6 weeks has been absolutely destroyed.
This is a pretty stunning bit of news after an optimistic early review from the Dallas Cowboys, but this significantly changes the game this season for Tony Romo and the ‘Boys. Not only do you lose a major piece in leading rusher and offensive MVP (arguably) DeMarco Murray to a division rival, but now you lose your most talented receiver and a guy who just signed a $70 million extension this offseason.
We hope Bryant is able to get back on the field and have a speedy recovery, but you wonder what this will do to the Cowboys’ chances at an NFC East title as the season progresses. It’s certainly not something that’s going to help this team, but if you’re worried more about your fantasy team, this does provide some interesting options on the waiver wire.
The Cowboys traded for Brice Butler, who may or may not have any sort of impact, and they also bumped Terrance Williams into the WR1 role. I think the player who has the most to gain from this is Cole Beasley, who will become Tony Romo’s security blanket with Bryant out.
Devin Street is another option for the Cowboys, who have been bitten hard by the injury bug at WR in the past. Romo has adjusted, making star players out of guys like Laurent Robinson.
Remember that?
I have more confidence in the Cowboys seeing what Tony Romo was able to do last year and in their week 1 comeback win over the Giants, but this is a huge, huge blow. There’s really no way around it.
