The Houston Texans Should Cut Brian Hoyer

Listen, this is not an article intended to slam quarterback Brian Hoyer.  The 29-year old has shown himself to be an able, smart veteran who can play well when put in the right situations.  Besides, winning ten games with the Cleveland Browns is certainly an accomplishment these days.

However, now that head coach Bill O’Brien has made the surprisingly quick decision to replace Hoyer as starter for the Houston Texans after one game it’s important that he and the team do the right thing and release him.

This is not just for the good of Hoyer but also the team.  While O’Brien may believe his team has a luxury in two quarterbacks capable of starting, history says such a situation can often prove detrimental.  It can cause division in the locker room, with some players wanting one quarterback and others wanting another.  It can also lead the coach to making frequent changes that result in an utter lack of offensive rhythm.

On the other side it’s counterproductive for the players.  One thing athletes crave more than anything is stability.  How could they possibly be expected to play with any degree of consistency if they’re constantly in fear of being yanked at the first sign of struggling?

It already happened to Hoyer in Cleveland with the Johnny Manziel fiasco.  If the Texans keep him on the roster, what’s to stop the same thing from happening to Mallett if and when he goes through a tough spell?

That is why this needs to end.  O’Brien seems to have seen enough of Hoyer and is prepared to go with Mallett, so the Texans should do themselves and both quarterbacks a favor and allow Hoyer to leave so he can seek out a new opportunity.

Otherwise they risk creating a distraction they don’t want and can’t afford.
