Eli Manning Signs Four Year Extension with Giants

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the New York Giants and quarterback Eli Manning are in the midst of finalizing a four-year, $84 million dollar contract extension. The new deal would give Manning a $21 million AAV, which places him in the top five in average money with the likes of Russell Wilson and Phillip Rivers. There will reportedly be a total of $65 million in guaranteed money for Manning. The deal will include a no-trade clause per Rapoport.

The 34-year old Manning is in the final year of a six-year, $97,500,000 contract with the New York Giants, which including a $13,000,000 signing bonus, $35,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $16,250,000. The deal will almost certainly would set Manning to finish his career as a New York Giant.

While he was originally drafted by the San Diego Chargers back in 2004 with the first overall pick, Manning has played every snap of his 11-year career with the Giants. He’s led them to two Super Bowl championships and earned MVP honors in both of those victories. He currently sits as the Giants All-Time Leader in most major quarterback categories, including pass attempts, pass completions, passing touchdowns (259) and passing yards with over 39,700.

He’s on track to eclipse the 40,000 passing yard mark, and would be come just the 15th player to do so. Manning is currently 15th all-time in NFL passing yards and 13th in passing touchdowns. Even a slew of mediocre seasons by Manning’s standards could easily push him into the top-10 in those categories by the time this new contract comes up. While he’s always seemed to live under the shadow of his brother Peyton, Eli has truly built a highly respectable, dare I say Hall of Fame worthy career.

The $84 million dollar deal would place Manning 13th in total contract value among quarterbacks. Coincidentally, that places him right between Ben Roethlisberger and Phillip Rivers, who just received his own extension this offseason.

Looking towards the 2016 free agent class, the Giants will have Jason Pierre-Paul, Prince Amukamara, Cullen Jenkins, and Calvin Pace to lock-up.

Around the league, it seems teams are making a push to sign players before the season officially starts Thursday night. Today, players such as Luke Kuechly, Marcell Darius, Anthony Castonzo, and Jarius Wright have agreed to deals. Multiple reports are saying the Bengals and AJ Green have made significant progress in finalizing a deal, but that deal is not yet finalized.
