Given the money involved, it’s going to prove very difficult for the Washington Redskins to trade Robert Griffin III after proclaiming Kirk Cousins their starter. Still, there is some possibility. If so, fans should keep an eye on these teams over the next few days.
Kansas City Chiefs
This sounds like a classic Andy Reid type of move. Few coaches in the NFL have a more proven track record of either developing or turning around quarterbacks than the Kansas City Chiefs maestro. His work with Jeff Garcia and Michael Vick are two prime example. Imagine the things he could possibly accomplish with Griffin.
Alex Smith is the man of the moment for now, but Reid is always looking for alternatives. Griffin is younger and has higher physical upside. It sounds like exactly his kind of side project that could pay off in a year or two.
New York Jets
Geno Smith looks like he’s not going to go much further with the New York Jets, and Ryan Fitzpatrick is hardly a long-term option. So it comes down to how much they believe 4th round pick Bryce Petty can be their future. It’s an interesting debate to have.
In truth the big reason the Jets make sense is of course their instability at the position but also the presence of offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. He has a history of producing some pretty good seasons with quarterbacks like Griffin. Among those that come to mind is Kordell Stewart, who had his best statistical season as a pro under Gailey in 1997 (3,498 total yards, 31 touchdowns).
It might be worth the risk to see if he can have similar magic with RGIII.
Chicago Bears
At this point it looks like RGIII is about as dispirited as a player can get. What he could really use is a coach known for his ability to motivate. There are few better than John Fox of the Chicago Bears. However, the reasoning goes far beyond that. Keep in mind this new regime of Fox and GM Ryan Pace have inherited Jay Cutler at quarterback along with the massively overpriced contract handed to him the year before.
Rumors were rampant the team was trying to trade the 32-year old but in the end they weren’t in position to do so due largely to money and lack of replacements. Would adding Griffin be an upgrade? Hard to say but he is seven years younger than Cutler and been to a Pro Bowl more recently (2012 to 2008).
Chances are higher they’d look to the 2016 draft instead, but it’s an interesting idea.
